TERRAIN

North-east Unbound
India's Last Great Secret

There is a mystical, almost otherworldly quality to North-east India that sets it apart from every other riding destination on the planet. Ancient forests draped in cloud, rivers that run so clear the boats above them appear to float on glass. Monasteries founded centuries ago still alive with daily prayer, prayer flags catching a mountain wind, the smell of butter lamps drifting across a high-altitude courtyard at dawn. This is a part of the world of extraordinary, layered beauty – and it is waiting, quietly and patiently, to be discovered by the rider who is ready for it.

This expedition moves through three of India's most extraordinary and distinct states. It begins in Assam – on the banks of the mighty Brahmaputra, one of the world's great rivers, wide enough in places to feel more like an inland sea – and traverses Kaziranga, the UNESCO World Heritage national park that shelters two-thirds of the world's remaining one-horned rhinoceroses in its tall grass and ancient forest. It climbs into Meghalaya – whose name translates as "the Abode of Clouds" – where Cherrapunji holds the record for the highest annual rainfall ever recorded on Earth, where waterfalls drop 340 metres into pools of luminous green, and where the Umngot River at Dawki runs over a pale limestone bed with a clarity that photographers and riders alike struggle to convince anyone of until it is seen in person. And it crosses into Arunachal Pradesh – a restricted state accessible only by special permit, where Sela Pass rises to 4,170 metres through snow and frozen lakes, and Tawang, perched on a Himalayan ridge, is home to the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world.

This is a route of mixed terrain – tarmac highways, mountain switchbacks, jungle roads, and stretches where the surface becomes more of a suggestion than a fact – and it is best ridden with a team that has covered every kilometre of it across multiple seasons. Royal Adventure Moto Tours holds the permits, knows the roads, and has built the relationships with the places and communities on this route that turn a demanding itinerary into an extraordinary one.

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1 - Arrival in Guwahati (Altitude: 55m / 180ft)

Your North-east India adventure begins in Guwahati, the gateway to Assam and the eastern Himalayas. Arrive at the airport, meet the Royal Adventure team and settle into the rhythm of the journey. The day is deliberately relaxed, giving everyone time to arrive, meet fellow riders and complete the welcome briefing. We cover the route ahead, riding expectations, safety procedures and the support arrangements that will accompany the group throughout the expedition. If time allows, a visit to the Kamakhya Temple offers a first glimpse into the rich spiritual character of the Northeast before the journey properly begins.

Day 2 - Guwahati to Cherrapunji (Altitude: 1,484m / 4,869ft)

The first riding day takes the group south into Meghalaya, leaving the broad plains of Assam behind as the road begins to climb into the Khasi Hills. The landscape changes rapidly — forested slopes, winding mountain roads, waterfalls and clouds gathering around the ridgelines. Cherrapunji, one of the most famous high-rainfall regions on Earth, becomes the base for the next stage of the journey. The riding is a perfect introduction to Meghalaya, combining flowing tarmac with increasingly dramatic mountain scenery.

Day 3 - Cherrapunji Exploration Loop (Altitude: 1,484m / 4,869ft)

A full day to explore the remarkable landscapes surrounding Cherrapunji. The route takes in dramatic viewpoints, ancient forests, waterfalls and the distinctive limestone landscape of the Khasi Hills. This is a day where the motorcycle becomes the perfect way to move between places that feel completely different from one another. The roads wind through mist-covered hills and remote villages, with plenty of opportunities to stop, take photographs and experience the landscape rather than simply pass through it.

Day 4 - Cherrapunji to Shnongpdeng via Mawlynnong and Dawki (Altitude: 120m / 394ft)

The road descends from the Khasi Hills towards the India-Bangladesh border, with Mawlynnong and Dawki forming two of the day's major highlights. Mawlynnong is surrounded by beautifully maintained villages and lush forest, while Dawki is home to the extraordinary Umngot River, famous for water so clear that boats appear to float above it. From the hills to the river valley, the changing scenery makes this one of the most visually varied riding days of the expedition. The evening is spent at Shnongpdeng, beside the river and surrounded by Meghalaya's green landscape.

Day 5 - Dawki to Shillong via Krangshuri Falls (Altitude: 1,496m / 4,908ft)

Leaving the border region, the route heads back towards the Khasi highlands with a stop at Krangshuri Falls, one of Meghalaya's striking natural attractions. Turquoise water, forested cliffs and winding roads make the approach as rewarding as the destination itself. From the falls, the journey continues towards Shillong, the atmospheric hill capital of Meghalaya. The afternoon and evening offer time to experience the city's cafés, markets and relaxed mountain character after several days in the more remote countryside.

Day 6 - Shillong to Kaziranga (Altitude: 80m / 262ft)

The route leaves Meghalaya and descends back towards Assam, with the landscape gradually changing from cool mountain country to the broad plains of the Brahmaputra Valley. The destination is Kaziranga National Park, one of India's most celebrated wildlife reserves and home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros. After arriving and settling in, there is an opportunity to experience the surrounding wilderness and prepare for the next stage of the journey, which heads north towards the mountains of Arunachal Pradesh.

Day 7 - Kaziranga to Dirang (Altitude: 1,560m / 5,118ft)

Today the expedition turns towards Arunachal Pradesh. The road gradually leaves the plains behind and begins climbing through the foothills, with the scenery becoming increasingly mountainous as the group approaches Dirang. Forested valleys, rivers, traditional villages and dramatic mountain roads define the ride. Dirang provides a peaceful mountain base for the night and marks the beginning of the high-altitude section of the journey towards Tawang.

Day 8 - Dirang to Tawang via Sela Pass (Max Altitude: 4,170m / 13,680ft)

One of the defining riding days of the expedition. From Dirang the road climbs steadily towards the high Himalayas and the spectacular Sela Pass at approximately 4,170 metres. The terrain changes dramatically with altitude, opening into vast mountain landscapes, high-altitude lakes and winding roads carved into the slopes. After crossing the pass, the route continues towards Tawang, a remote Himalayan town surrounded by extraordinary scenery and deeply rooted Buddhist culture. The day's riding is demanding but unforgettable, and the arrival in Tawang feels like reaching another world.

Day 9 - Explore Tawang (Altitude: 2,669m / 8,757ft)

A full day dedicated to discovering Tawang and its surrounding landscapes. The highlight is Tawang Monastery, one of the most important Buddhist monasteries in the Himalayas and an extraordinary piece of architecture set high in the mountains. The day also allows time to visit nearby viewpoints, lakes and local communities, with the pace deliberately slowed after the demanding mountain crossing. This is a chance to understand the culture and history of Arunachal Pradesh as well as enjoy the dramatic scenery around Tawang.

Day 10 - Tawang to Nameri (Altitude: 213m / 699ft)

The journey begins its descent from the high Himalayas, retracing the mountain roads before gradually returning towards the lower valleys of Arunachal Pradesh. The change in altitude is remarkable — cool mountain air gives way to warmer forests, rivers and greener landscapes. Nameri provides a completely different environment from Tawang, with its forested setting and proximity to the river. It is a fitting transition from the Himalayan section of the expedition towards the final day in Assam.

Day 11 - Nameri to Guwahati (Altitude: 55m / 180ft)

The final riding day brings the expedition back towards Guwahati through the landscapes of Assam. After days of mountain roads, high passes, forests, rivers and remote communities, the route gradually returns to the plains. The journey concludes in Guwahati with the team coming together for a final farewell. Eleven days earlier the expedition began in this same region; now the riders return with a collection of experiences that stretch from the forests of Meghalaya to the high Himalayas of Arunachal Pradesh.

A Word on Care

North-east India demands a level of logistical preparation that is genuinely different from any other tour in the portfolio. The Inner Line Permits for Arunachal Pradesh must be arranged well in advance and are not available at the border. The routes in the restricted zones are coordinated by the Indian Army and the border police, creating a journey that requires careful preparation. Every element of the operation has been considered — from permits and park bookings to border protocols, road intelligence and the logistics that come from having ridden these routes when they were at their most demanding. Royal Adventure Moto Tours has managed every element of the preparation across multiple seasons — the permits, the park bookings, the border protocols, and the road intelligence that comes from having ridden these routes when they were at their most challenging. Riders arrive to everything in place, with the team ready to support them throughout the journey and every detail planned ahead. The result is a journey where the complexity on the road can be given complete attention — which, on this particular route, is exactly what it deserves.

For bookings, availability, and any questions about the tour, get in touch with the Royal Adventure Moto Tours team. A detailed pre-departure information pack is shared with all confirmed riders — covering kit lists, permits, what to expect on the road, and preparation for riding through one of the most extraordinary and beautiful regions of India.
