SEASONAL PICK

Ladakh Unbound
A Royal Adventure

THE DESTINATION

There are places that stop you — not because of a landmark or a view, because the sheer scale of the land renders words redundant. Ladakh is one of those places. At 5,000 meters, astride a motorcycle with nothing ahead but open sky, something shifts. The accumulated weight of decades — the schedules, the obligations — falls away.

Perched at the northern tip of India where the Himalayan and Karakoram ranges converge, Ladakh sits at an average altitude of 3,500 meters — higher than most European summits. It is home to turquoise lakes that stretch into China, sand dunes rising without warning from mountain desert, Buddhist monasteries built into cliff faces a millennium ago, and roads that reach heights no other motorable road on the planet can claim.

This is built for riders who have earned the right to something extraordinary — who understand that the finest journeys are not the easiest ones. Royal Adventure Moto Tours has spent years delivering every meter of these roads, across every season, building the support infrastructure that allows riders to push further with complete confidence. The result is a journey that is fully supported, expertly guided, and deeply personal.

FULL ITINERARY

Day 1 - Arrival in Leh (Altitude: 3,500m / 11,500ft)

Landing in Leh is an arrival unlike any other — thin air, extraordinary light, and mountains that make everything feel immediately different. Transfers are arranged and the team is on hand from the moment of arrival. Today asks just one thing: rest. The body needs time to adjust to altitude, and this day is protected for exactly that. Early evening brings the group together for a welcome briefing — meeting the team, collecting documents for restricted area permits, and a first look at what lies ahead. For those feeling well enough, Leh's ancient market and the hilltop Shanti Stupa offer a gentle, rewarding first evening.

Day 2 - Leh Local Sightseeing (Altitude: 3,500m / 11,500ft)

Distance: ~80 kms · Approx. Time: 3–4 hrs

A warm-up loop through Leh's most iconic landmarks — designed to settle riders into the Ladakhi rhythm before the serious riding begins. The historic Leh Palace dominates the old city skyline; Magnetic Hill delivers its famous optical illusion; Sangam offers the spectacular confluence of the Zanskar and Indus rivers; and Gurudwara Pathar Sahib provides a moment of genuine calm. A short day by the standards of what follows — but the perfect introduction to Ladakh's character and scale.

Day 3 - Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La (Max Altitude: 5,602m / 18,380ft)

Distance: 125 kms · Approx. Time: ~5 hrs

The first serious riding day, and it makes an immediate statement. Khardung La at 5,602 metres is one of the highest motorable passes in the world — the air thins noticeably on the climb, the hairpins tighten, and at the summit the world opens in every direction. The descent drops into Nubra Valley — an unexpected revelation of green and warmth after the stark terrain above. The afternoon brings the giant Maitreya Buddha at Diskit and, at sunset, the Hunder Sand Dunes: an incongruous stretch of desert in the middle of a mountain valley, home to the rare double-humped Bactrian camel. The day's miles and altitude are well and truly earned.

Day 4 - Nubra Valley to Pangong Tso via Shyok River Route (Max Altitude: 4,350m / 14,270ft)

Distance: 200 kms · Approx. Time: ~8 hrs

The longest riding day of the expedition, and one of the most beautiful. The Shyok River route is raw and remote — a track winding alongside a braided river through gorges with almost no civilisation in sight. It demands respect and rewards it fully. The Royal Adventure team rides throughout, with mechanical support always close. And then Pangong Tso appears — a lake of improbable, almost manufactured blue, 134 kilometres long, stretching deep into Tibet, surrounded by rust-red mountains reflected in its surface. The campsite sits right on the water's edge. This is one of those evenings where nobody reaches for a phone.

Day 5 - Pangong Tso to Hanle via Tsaga La (Max Altitude: 4,630m / 15,200ft)

Distance: 145 kms · Approx. Time: ~5 hrs

Leaving Pangong is genuinely difficult, but the road south-east offers its own rewards. Passing through the traditional lakeside villages of Maan and Merak, the route climbs over Tsaga La before dropping into the remote Changthang Plateau. A stop at the Rezang La War Memorial — commemorating the extraordinary Indian stand in the 1962 Sino-Indian War — is a moment of quiet reflection in a landscape that carries its history seriously. Hanle rewards those who make the effort: an ancient monastery village at the edge of one of the world's darkest night skies, home to a high-altitude observatory. On a clear night, the Milky Way is not just visible — it is overwhelming.

Day 6 - Hanle to Umling La & Back (Max Altitude: 5,798m / 19,024ft)

Distance: 180 kms (round trip) · Approx. Time: ~8 hrs

This is the day. Umling La at 5,798 metres is the highest motorable road on Earth — not in Asia, not in India, on the planet. The climb through increasingly spare, alien terrain is extraordinary in itself, oxygen thinning with every kilometre. The summit is a place of complete silence — wind, prayer flags, and the quiet pride of having ridden somewhere very few humans will ever stand. The Royal Adventure medical team monitors altitude awareness throughout and rides with the group every metre of the ascent. After photographs that will be shown for decades, the convoy descends to Hanle for a well-earned rest. No subsequent riding day will quite match this one.

Day 7 - Hanle to Tso Moriri (Max Altitude: 4,511m / 14,800ft)

Distance: 160 kms · Approx. Time: ~6 hrs

The route west crosses the open Changthang Plateau — high-altitude grassland that feels like another world entirely. This is Changpa nomad territory, and encountering their camps on the road is one of those unplanned moments that no itinerary can manufacture. Wild Kiang, mountain foxes, and rare migratory birds are frequent companions along this stretch. Tso Moriri, the destination, is a lake many riders consider more beautiful than Pangong in its quieter way — smaller, more intimate, ringed by 6,000-metre peaks and almost entirely free of crowds. The Korzok Monastery sits on its northern shore. Camp here and let the silence do what silence does best.

Day 8 - Tso Moriri to Tso Kar (Max Altitude: ~4,500m / 14,760ft)

Distance: 90 kms · Approx. Time: ~5 hrs

A shorter day in distance, but no less rewarding. The plateau roads between the two lakes pass through some of the expedition's most remote terrain — a horizon that seems unreachable, and a sky that takes on the particular depth of blue only found at altitude. Tso Kar — the "White Lake," named for the salt crust encrusting its banks — is a place of great stillness. Its surrounding marshlands are home to the rare black-necked crane and a range of migratory birds. Not dramatic in the way of Pangong or Umling La, but quietly extraordinary in the way only genuinely remote places can be.

Day 9 - Tso Kar to Leh via Tanglang La (Max Altitude: 5,328m / 17,480ft)

Distance: 140 kms · Approx. Time: ~6 hrs

The final riding day, and the road saves one last significant moment. Tanglang La at 5,328 metres frames the Zanskar range to the south and the Ladakhi plateau to the north in a panorama that is a fitting farewell from a landscape that has given so much. The descent follows the legendary Manali-Leh Highway back through the Indus Valley into Leh. The evening is set aside for a celebratory dinner — stories, photographs, and the quiet mutual respect of riders who have shared something genuinely demanding and genuinely memorable together.

Day 10 - Final Rest Day in Leh (Altitude: 3,500m / 11,500ft)

A day without obligation — and after nine days of riding, it is well earned. Leh rewards those who give it time: narrow lanes in the old city, rooftop cafés with palace views, local markets with pashmina and hand-crafted silver. For those with energy for one last cultural stop, Thiksey Monastery and Hemis — the largest in Ladakh — are among the finest Buddhist sites in the Himalayas. For those whose legs and spirit prefer a rooftop and a good book, that is equally valid. This day belongs entirely to each rider.

Day 11 - Farewell to Ladakh (Altitude: 3,500m / 11,500ft · Departure Day)

Breakfast together one final time. Kit packed, contacts exchanged, photographs shared. And then the mountains — the passes, the lakes, Umling La at sunrise, the sand dunes at dusk — become memory. Not the fading kind. The sort that surfaces years later, unexpectedly, in the middle of an ordinary day, and makes everything around it feel briefly less vivid. That is what Ladakh does. That is why riders come back.

A WORD ON CARE

Riding at altitude demands respect — for the road, for the body, and for the mountain. Royal Adventure Moto Tours has built every element of the support structure — medical, mechanical, navigational — around one principle: that every rider should feel, at every moment, that they are in safe hands. The care is not visible until it is needed. When it is needed, it is already there.

For bookings, availability, and any questions about the tour, get in touch with the Royal Adventure Moto Tours team. A detailed pre-departure information pack is shared with all confirmed riders — covering kit lists, fitness preparation, altitude guidance, and what to expect on the road.
